This past year was - professional wise - a very good year. At the beginning of 2015 I was invited to do a talk for new students (6th graders) and their parents about future education and at my school was selected to speak at BETT (London, UK) with friend and SMART Exemplary Educator Emil Waldhauser about the Global Collaboration projects we did with our classes. Throughout the year I did some other presentations during the 'week van de mediawijsheid' (digital footprint week) at two schools in our community and a presentation about SMART Notebook and interactive whiteboards at at a geography teachers conference. And at last but not least I made it to the European part of the EdTech team ... How about that?
I also was selected to attend SMART amp Champs (Madrid, Spain) and the global SEE Summit (Calgary, Canada) with friend and colleague Henk-Jan van Mierlo amongst many others whom I got to meet again at these SMART professional development conferences which were amazing and gained me a lot. I even got the chance to speak at a staff meeting at SMART HQ which gained me SMART kapp iQ for my SMART Collaborative Classroom. Very happy with that!
Besides the use of education technology in my classroom such as the multiple SMART Boards, the new kapp iQ, 1:1 iPads, SMART amp and Google Classroom I did a few field trips with my classes. The trips to SEE Cédric Mainil in Belgium and to Emil Waldhauser in the Czech Republic were the best. I introduced LEGO in my classroom, and am just getting started with that ... al this passes by in this short video that I created. Enjoy.
Na twee leuke en zeer geslaagde lessen met LEGO bij aardrijkskunde met 2-vmbo, werd het tijd voor verbreding èn verdieping. De uitdaging was nu om met 3-vmbo klassen aan de slag te gaan en hen verschillende aardrijkskundige begrippen m.b.t. tot het SE-onderwerp 'Grenzen en identiteit' over het hoofdstuk Rusland. Dus begrippen als separatisme, nationalisme en gewapend conflict kwamen aan bod. Begrippen die de les na de LEGO-les getoetst werden. Zo kon ik mooi toetsen of de begrippen een beetje beginnen te leven bij de leerlingen na het uitbeelden mbv LEGO. De leerlingen gingen weer in groepjes bouwen en de foto van het eindresultaat moesten ze deze keer op Instagram plaatsen met het gebruik van de juiste hashtag; respectievelijk #ak3Mb en #ak3Md. Je kunt zelf even Googlen via instagram op deze hashtags en de resultaten bekijken.
Tijdens de les kwam een collega Duits langs om te kijken wat ze aan het doen waren en we konden beide zien dat de leerlingen actief met de begrippen bezig waren, mij geen vragen stelden, maar vooral overlegden in hun groep en incidenteel naar hun boek grepen en vooral hard(op) aan het nadenken waren. Leuk om te zien!
Ik heb twee klassen 3-vmbo en als ik dit experiment goed zou doen, dan zou ik één klas niet met LEGO laten spelen en de andere klas wel, om zo de resultaten tussen de twee groepen te vergelijken en misschien een voorzichtige conclusie kunnen trekken. Voorzichtig omdat de klassen natuurlijk niet helemaal hetzelfde zijn, dus de proefopstelling niet geheel ceteris paribus is. Maar, ik kon het niet over m'n hart verkrijgen om één van de twee klassen de LEGO-les en eventueel beter resultaat van de toetsing de volgende les te ontnemen. Wel heb ik in één van de klassen voor en na de LEGO-les geïnterviewd over de begrippenkennis. Helaas voor het experiment (nog) geen bewijs dat de LEGO-les een positieve bijdrage heeft geleverd aan de begrippenkennis van de geïnterviewden. Ik heb de interviews toch opgenomen in het korte filmpje.
Inmiddels hebben de eerste klassen en de vierde klassen ook in de gaten dat ik soms LEGO gebruik bij de aardrijkskunde-les, dus die willen ook graag. Zeker met 4-vmbo lijkt het mij echt een uitdaging om de uitbeelding van de begrippen mbv LEGO te toetsen. De CE-onderwerpen zijn: 'Weer en klimaat', 'Bevolking en ruimte' en 'Water'. Genoeg begrippen die ruimtelijk uitgebeeld kunnen worden dus. Gaan we doen!
En een andere verdieping wordt dat ik eens ga kijken/toetsen hoe de leerlingen eventueel verbanden tussen begrippen kunnen uitbeelden met LEGO-blokjes. En misschien is het leuk - om de competitie wat te verhogen - dat leerlingen (ook) hun eigen LEGO ook mee mogen nemen: BYOL (Bring Your Own LEGO). Wordt vervolgd!

Tijdens de knagdag ben ik door Falco Zwinkels z'n workshop geïnspireerd geraakt om ook aan de slag te gaan met Lego in de les. Tijdens de workshop dacht ik dat leerlingen op een andere manier aan de slag gaan met begrippen en daar hun eigen vorm aan geven het wellicht dan beter onthouden. Ik had er iig zin in. Via marktplaats heb ik een grote zak Lego gekocht, gesorteerd in zes bakjes, zodat elke groep een eigen bakje Lego zou hebben.
Het onderwerp waar klas 2 mee aan de slag is gaat over de Verenigde Staten van Amerika en ik heb negen aardrijkskundige begrippen uitgezocht, die met de VS te maken hebben. Voor elk begrip kregen de leerlingen 4 minuten de tijd om:
1. het begrip te bouwen met de Lego blokjes.
2. Een foto te maken van hun bouwwerk.
3. Deze foto in een SMART amp workspace te plaatsen en te voorzien van een korte beschrijving.

De SMART amp workspaces had ik van te voren aangemaakt voor elk groepje, zodat zij hun materiaal daar in kwijt konden. De leerlingen waren bijzonder enthousiast en hebben dat lesuur keihard gewerkt en het heeft erg mooie resultaten opgeleverd:

Afgelopen vrijdag de 13e m'n interactieve presentatie gedaan over de didactische meerwaarde en inzet van het digitale schoolbord bij het aardrijkskundeonderwijs op de KNAGdag, welke als thema 'Toekomst' had. De onderwijsdag voor leraren aardrijkskunde werd gehouden in theater Cinemec in Ede. Samen met twee collega's aardrijkskunde van het Ashram College ben ik afgereisd naar Ede om m'n presentatie te houden. Er waren ruim 800 aardrijkundedocenten, waaronder een aantal oude bekenden en zelfs m'n eigen oud-leraar van de lerarenopleiding: Jaap van Eekeren.
Aan het werkbord: De SMART kapp iQ.
Vanwege de grote hoeveelheid aanmeldingen, mocht ik in de grote zaal m'n ding doen. Ik had zelf gezorgd via Techdata dat er een SMART Board 6065 (kapp iQ) in de zaal aanwezig was, want als ik wilde laten zien wat ik didactisch doe met dat digitale schoolbord in mijn SMART Collaborative Classroom, dan moet ik natuurlijk wel de touchgevoeligheid van het scherm kunnen laten zien. M'n focus lag op drie zaken. Het digitale schoolbord als:
Teachershub, waar ik allerlei content van de leerlingen kan verzamelen en laten zien aan de klas. Niet per sé digibord software voor nodig, omdat een verzameling van tweets of Instagram posts ook met een beamer kan, maar zodra SMART Notebook LAB aan bod kwam werd het interessanter en leuker. Leerlingen kunnen hun bijdrage (tekst en/of afbeeldingen) dan in de SMART Notebookles plaatsen. Echt gaaf. De creativiteit van de docent bepaalt ook hier weer hoe dat didactisch weg te zetten ...
Een SMART Board (of ander gerenommeerd merk digibord) is in principe een werkbord. Voor leerlingen en veel minder bedoelt als presentatiescherm. (Wat dus wel vaak de praktijk is). Dat kan dus m.b.v. de aanraakgevoeligheid - de beperking is dat niet de gehele klas dat tegelijkertijd kan doen of in een BYOD omgeving kan elke smartphone, tablet of laptop een bijdrage leveren.
Omdat het een aardrijkskundeconferentie is heb ik ook een pleidooi gehouden voor Global Collaboration en laten zien hoe ik dat in mijn lessen doe. Enthousiasme. Leuk.
Na wat over de onderwijsmarkt te hebben gelopen (en bij de BuiteNLand-stand een Google Cardboard gescoord en wist je dat Greenpeace heel leuk en gratis lesmateriaal aanbiedt?) heb ik zelf ook nog een workshop gevolgd over het gebruik van Lego in de aardrijkskundeles door Falco Zwinkels. En dat was superleuk! Werken met Lego is een superleuke manier om leerlingen te leren goed te kijken om vervolgens zelf bijvoorbeeld een geografisch begrip of proces uit te beelden m.b.v. Lego blokjes. Ga ik ook een keer oefenen.
Deze KNAGdag was zeer geslaagd en met een koffer vol nieuwe ideeën en contacten ging ik weer naar huis.
For the past 15+ years one of the first assignments my students need to do when they enter my classroom in the 7th grade, freshly from primary school, is to draw a map of their route from home to school. This is for understanding and reading maps whilst having a proper look around with a pair of geographical glasses. ;) They need to add the scale, a title, a compass (at least the arrow that points to the north) and the legend of their map.
And since a couple of years my students seem to be less engaged or at least that's what their work looks like and that doesn't make me happy. So one of my colleagues helped me out and she asked why I didn't use the iPad instead (since 7th graders start with iPads this year) and let them create a TomTom alike stop-motion video from their route from home to school or vise versa. Great idea! With great results. And after they've done the video they had to watch their video and create a map with al the landmarks that is visible in their video. Also great results.
Most of my students used the Lego Movie Maker stop-motion app, which is very good and free!
Sinds ik de Google deelcertificaten heb behaald via de Google Training Center en ik mijzelf een Certified Google Educator mag noemen, ben ik met Google Drive begonnen te werken. Waarbinnen de Google apps operationeel zijn en ik nooit meer gebruik maak van Pages, Word of andere equivalenten, maar zijn al mijn bestanden op één plek en kan ik van daaruit delen en in real time samenwerken met andere gebruikers. Hierdoor is de noodzaak van het werken met andere cloudopslagdiensten geheel overbodig geworden voor mij. Vroeger was ik fan van Dropbox, Skydrive en Evernote en maakte ik ook zoveel mogelijk accounts aan bij andere cloudopslagdiensten als The Box, Mammoth etc. Inmiddels heb ik bijna alles opgezegd en verwijderd, omdat ik door de spreekwoordelijke bomen het bos niet meer zag. De aantekeningen in Evernote heb ik handmatig overgezet naar Google Drive en de rest leeggemaakt en m'n account verwijderd. Dropbox bewaar ik nog, maar alleen voor derden, omdat er nog veel gedeeld wordt via deze opslagdienst. Zelf zet ik dus niks in dropbox, maar materiaal van anderen wat gedeeld wordt via dropbox, kan ik nu makkelijk bewaren.
Momenteel heb ik een Google Apps for Education account voor al m'n klassen en maak ik ook gebruik van Google Classroom en laat hen veelvuldig (samen)werken via Google Drive en SMART amp. Dat doe ik in de onderbouwklassen die 1:1 een iPad hebben, maar ook in klas 3 en hoger en zelfs (of juist) bij het PWS met eindexamenleerlingen havo. Werken in de cloud - en in mijn geval Google Drive - spaart tijd en levert goede resultaten op, omdat het werk steeds bij te sturen is.

Hierdoor kan je elkaars stuk snel en makkelijk bekijken. Zo is de samenwerking voor het maken van een profielwerkstuk erg handig, mede door de op- en aanmerkingen die de docent kan toevoegen. Dit alles scheelt veel tijd in het samen maken van een werkstuk en levert misschien wel beter gecontroleerd werk op!" - Noa Dresselaars
Last year in London, UK I met Ken Shelton from the EdTechTeam and since that time we haven't stopped talking about joining forces and collaborating. Recently I was asked if I would like to join the European EdTechTeam in order to present at Google Apps for Education Summits (gafe), iOS Summits and Future Ready School Summits. I am more than happy to share my experience and work with teachers at occasions such as these and love to join this team. My first official appearance will be in Saudi Arabia at the Saudi Arabia Summit at the international school in Dhahran. This two-day high-intensity event focuses on deploying, integrating, and using Google Apps for Education (and other Google tools) to promote student learning in K-12 and higher education. I will be presenting about SMART amp and Google Classroom.
Now to arrange visa, flight tickets etc. and I want to prepare myself for this trip as I have never visited the Middle East before and want to learn more about the the dress code etc. in order to do this as smoothly as possible.
And thanks to my school that allows me to do such things besides teaching ...
UPDATE (29th October 2015)
I returned this Tuesday from the embassy and it turned out that the paperwork - the invitation - was not right.
At first the place of application stated on the invitation is Washington and should be The Hague.
And second I needed a letter from a Dutch(!) company that has an account number in the Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands. Which EdTech hasn’t.
Travista is to blame because the send me the wrong document two weeks ago (little did I know) instead of sending me the invitation document from Saudi Arabia. So I won’t be able to travel to Saudi Arabia to join in on the team and help out at the gafe summit. But there will be more EdTech Summits that I will be presenting in the near future!
Frans Droog heeft me uitgenodigd om mee te doen aan de uitdaging #blimageNL. De uitdaging is om aan de hand van een foto een persoonlijk verhaal over onderwijs te schrijven (blogpost + image = blimage). Op deze foto zie de White Hat Ceremony in de aula van SMART Technologies HQ, Calgary Canada. Ik was daar in juli voor een conferentie voor SMART Exemplary Educators. Voorbeeldocenten vanuit de gehele wereld bij elkaar sparren over onderwijs(verandering) en het gebruik van onderwijstechnologie. Supertof. We zijn enorm in de watten gelegd de gehele week en op de foto bedankt de CEO van SMART Technologies ons voor onze inzet de afgelopen week en de afgelopen jaren voor de klas. Los van de kadootjes als Amazon gift cards, SMART Boards e.a. die op dit moment ook uitgedeeld werden, ervoeren we het benoemen van de waardering vooral heel waardevol. Zo waardevol dat deze 77 docenten uit 23 verschillende landen echt wel een stapje harder zullen lopen als advocaat van SMART Technologies. Is hele goeie marketing van SMART Technologies, maar het is en hoeft in de klas ook eigenlijk niet anders. In de klas zouden we leerlingen ook veel meer moeten complimenteren voor hun inzet, dan hen alleen maar te confronteren met de behaalde resultaten van de gestandaardiseerde toetsen. Onderwijs is zo veel meer. Het gaat immers om mensen. Voor het komend schooljaar ga ik meer persoonlijke complimenten uitdelen voor de inzet van m'n leerlingen en minder focus op de resultaten van de vastgelegde toetsmomenten. Sterker nog, misschien ga ik wel een experiment doen en geen cijfers meer uitdelen, maar met een puntensysteem werken, waarbij leerlingen een bepaald aantal punten moeten behalen om de periode oid voldoende af te sluiten en dat hoeft lang niet altijd en alleen met het maken van toetsen. Ik ga dat de komende twee weken van mijn vakantie nog even nader uitzoeken en ben zo enthousiast dat ik dat eigenlijk komend schooljaar al wil gaan toepassen. U hoort nog van mij.
This day starts with the demoing from the outcome of the hackathon from last Tuesday. Each group needed to present their final thing and most of them were amazing! All was total NDA, so we cant' tweet, blog or post anything about it on the internet. We even couldn't take pictures of the new SMART ideas. My group didn't won the hackathon prize, but I think that it was still the coolest Notebook LAB thing ever. It was entitled 'Dino Team Quiz' and that's all I can share. ;)
After a few hours of presentations of possibly new stuff in Notebook, amp etc. we went back to SAIT Polytechnic for a presentation about Free The Children. An Educational partner in moving the world from “me to we”. Check out this site if you want to get involved. A program that I am really axious to include in my 'global citizenship' classes.

This day was at prior summits the last day, but fortunately we have one more day to go! I had the honor to do the ice-breaker activity and did prepare a SMART Response quiz and a Kahoot. The SMART Response Quiz was an app logo quiz with edtech apps and the Kahoot was flags of countries from people that were at this summit. I brought a few prizes with me such as pins, flash drives, a mug etc.

Today we needed to think about the start of a new global collaboration project with another SEE and of course the use of SMART amp, especially now we can share workspaces with others outside the domain. I hooked up with Yahir from Mexico who is teaching computer science to 7th graders and I want them to collaborate with my 7th or 8th graders. More to follow.
During the fireside chat we got the chance to ask Greg Estell and Warren Barkley questions concerning education, SMART Technologies, the roadmap etc. That was nice and one quote I can recall from Greg was "How old is the technology in your pocket compared to the technology you use in the class room?" and this sums up the gap between teachers reluctant to use that technology that is already in their students' pocket.
Then we had to head to SMART Technologies HQ again for something special. And of course the peer mentors already what that was about! The White Hat ceremony!! Yes! The entire staff of SMART cheered for us and the head of the board gave us a big thank you, whilst we needed to reach under our seat to grap a coupon with a little surprise! The Oprah Winfrey moment. LOL. Three special big prices were a SMART kapp, a SMART kapp iQ and a SMART Board. How cool is that! The small video shows the moment all SEEs entered the building and were cheered by SMART Technologies. Honorary Calgarian again! :)

Today started with a presentation about the brand SMART Technologies and branding. Branding is all about the perception of a product or service. SMART Technologies struggles with the fact that it’s not just an interactive white board company (anymore), but has much more to share and has shifted their core business to different kind of solutions for the classroom.
Of course SMART wants to get rid of the old SMART Boards, just as Apple wants all the old iPhones gone and exchanged for the newer versions, but Stephen Yao had a good story to tell. Although interactive flat panels are a more expensive than interactive white boards, you'll retrieve that with the far less energy costs. I was really surprised by the fact that (especially on a larger scale) moving from the interactive white board to the interactive flat panel could safe that amount of energy. Did a presentation today with Kristin Straumann at the headquarters of SMART Technologies. We were asked to do so and share the things that we do in our school and classroom in front the entire SMART staff. Greg Estell was so nice to have us over and introduced us before we could share our story. I’m not nervous to speak in front of a large audience, especially not about this topic. But today I needed to share this with the company that provides me with the technology that I use and I needed to do my very best … and it all needed to be in English. We both Kristin and myself did a great job and presentation went very well. I also stated out that the classroom solutions are great, but being with all the SEEs and SMARTians feels like home and is epic! We got a very nice applause and staff members told us that we did a great job. Now that’s what I’ll be taking home with me … Oh wait, there’s more. Greg asked us about the one thing that we are missing at this moment in our classroom for our kids … we both were stunned and couldn’t directly come up with anything. And sort of asking for let’s say a SMART Board seems so greedy, wouldn’t you agree? Greg assured us that we could think about it whilst the offer would last throughout the week. Will keep you posted on this ...
After lunch I was up for the unconference about Changing School Culture with SEEs Rebecca, Holger and Lori. My question or discussion point was about How to deal with teachers that are reluctant in the use of technology'. And it was my first time that I did an unconference. We've shared a Google document which all teachers can use a resource.
And at the end I did a co-presentation with Lise Galuga and Charity Harbeck about Google Certifications and Google events, where we can share our experience with SMART amp.
Oh, and we even were very close to a tornado. How about that? Check this short time-lapse movie.
This second day of the summit we spend all day at SMART Technologies HQ for three different activities and we started with the most awesome thing: the Hackathon. All SEEs were divided in smaller groups of 5-6 people with that same amount of software developers to start brainstorming on the next best thing for SMART Notebook, SMART LAB, SMART kapp, SMART kapp iQ and of course SMART amp. Brainstorming helped us getting further to an awesome plan within SMART LAB (activity builder), but is total NDA, due to avoid spoilers for new users. I really do hope that our idea will eventually really be added to SMART Notebook (LAB). We will find out more about that next Friday.
After spending a few hours with developers we were split into three large groups for a guided tour around SMART HQ:
software testing lab: real nice visit and we could all share our complaints. Did you know that in this testing lab they have all different kinds of computers with minimal settings and operating systems to test every release of soft- and firmware on all kinds of SMART Boards and interactive flat panels. Nice!
briefing center: Have been there before and was nothing new. Although the SMART Collaborative Classroom (showroom) is nice to be in.
hardware testing lab: this was the best. So many cool things were shared with us, but most of that is of course total NDA. The camera-testing was cool. Did you know that each camera is unique and has to cover and correct the errors from the other three cameras from the SMARt Board. This makes every board unique! How about that!
At last we all went to a reflection group, that we've signed up for. I was in the SMART Response VE group and could speak with the developers and we could share our wishes and the way we all use SMART Response VE in the classroom. There will be a new version coming soon, so nothing can be shared ahead of that. All I can say is that it will be very good! And it was nice to see that some of my earlier comments through a feedback session by phone were already in there.
After two days spending on the campus and downtown Calgary with Allen Brooks and others the Global SEE Summit was finally going to start and this day was going to be a very busy day full of new stuff. The opening keynote on Sunday night by Marc Prensky was nice and gave us the right mind set for the next couple of days (and hopefully the next couple of years whilst practising teaching in our classrooms). At first we were welcomed by Greg Estell - president SMART Technologies - sharing with us how great is was to have us around and that we could definitely learn from each other. Really? I think that I speak for all the 77 attendees from the 23 countries when saying that it was merely our honor to be there and that we were more than happy to share every thought we have about SMART Technologies and their soft- and hardware.
The ones that attended the Global See summit last year were the mentors of this summit and did have special tasks like leading conversations, organizing ice breakers, timekeepers, social media experts and (technical) support for the day.
Sessions as the road ahead lead by SMARTians showed the roadmap of SMART Technologies of which a lot is not for sharing. What I can share is that SMART is well known for the SMART Board of course, but there's more that meets the eye. The brand name wants to get rid of the perspective that it's only known for the interactive white boards, but wants to be known as the company with mainly software solutions for education such as SMART Notebook, SMART amp™ and SMART kapp. Nowadays it shouldn't really matter which hardware one uses, yet the software that one uses does. Of course all the SEEs are already aware of that and it's like preaching to the choir, so we could join in on the how to discussion. We've shared our points of view on this matter via gold star challenges. Good.

And at last all three software solutions (Notebook, amp and kapp) passed by through the day and their role and possibilities in education and of course we all could give feedback. Very long day to start with ... Tomorrow heading to SMART Technologies HQ.
The one thing that I can share about a feature the new release of SMART Notebook 15.1 is that the popular add-on XC Collaboration will no longer be available, however its functionality will be available in the form of a new activity called “Shout it Out!”
Shout it Out! will be a part of the Lesson Activity Builder in the SMART Notebook software, and will offer similar functions to XC Collaboration and more. We've used this one a couple of times and it's awesome! At first I was dissapointed with the fact that XC wasn't to be supported anymore, but this one is way cooler and better! Good job!
And the quote of the day was from Kristin Straumann, during the SMARTamp best practices session, she mentioned "I knew HOW to use it, I just didn't WHY to use it. UNTIL … I put my kids into a workspace" ... I LIKE THAT!
Het tweede jaar op rij dat ik bij het keuzeprogramma mondo op het Ashram College aan internationalisering heb gedaan vanuit eigen opgestarte projecten en het Global Teenager Project met Learning Circles over de rechten van het kind. Op eigen initiatief hebben we contact gehad met een schoolklas in Tsjechië via Skype en een met een schoolklas in Rusland via SMART amp™. En tijdens de Learning Circles met schoolklassen in Nederland en Suriname via een wiki. Het was leuk om een kijkje in de keuken te nemen bij een ander, maar ik ben van plan om dit structureler en meer in het curriculum te stoppen volgend schooljaar. De cherries on top waren het bezoek aan Gymnazium Zikmunda Wintra in Rakovnik, Tsjechië met 8 leerlingen en het bezoek aan Lycée Warocqué in Morlanwelz, België met alle mondo leerlingen.
Aan het begin van het schooljaar heb ik aan alle leerlingen gevraagd wat zij onder mondo oftewel wereldburgerschap verstonden. De leukste, beste en de meest treffende heb ik hieronder verzameld:
Wereldburgerschap is dat je goed omgaat met de wereld en de mensen om je heen.
Wereldburgerschap is dat een mens iets goed doet voor de samenleving en dat hij of zij de wereld een kleinbeetje beter maakt.
Wereldburgerschap betekent voor ons goed zijn voor de mensen en dieren om je heen, goed voor de wereld zorgen en niet vervuilen.
De wereldburgers die er zijn geweest of bestaan zijn bijv: Ghandi, Mandela, Vrijwilligers, mensenrechtenactivisten en nog veel meer andere mensen die zich op een positieve manier de aarde hebben geholpen en mensen in ontwikkelingslanden.
Wereldburgerschap is voor elkaar klaar staan er voor elkaar zijn om een multiculturele samenleving te worden. In deze wereld moeten we er voor elkaar zijn zoals de daklozen eten geven of een rommelig strand opruimen.
Wereldburgerschap betekent onder andere dat je iedereen gelijk behandeld en dat je ook interesse toont in andere culturen/samenlevingen, dat je met z'n allen één wereld bent en niet apart van elkaar. Op school hebben we bepaalde vakken waar je meer te weten komt over andere culturen en samenlevingen en omdat je zoveel verschillende kinderen in de klas hebt kan iedereen er wat over vertellen en begrijp je elkaar meer.
This week we all received the summit guide and the program looks just fantastic and I'm really looking forward. Instead of the regular four days, we will now have five full days of learning and professional development at the SEE Summit in Calgary, Alberta.
As a summit peer mentor there will be some sessions that I will do. On Tuesday I'm one of the reflection group leaders to point out what we've gained on that day. On Wednesday I will be leading with three other SEEs the unconference about Changing School Culture. A great topic and really where my school is at now. And I will do a session with Lise and Charity on presenting about SMARTamp at Google Apps for Education summits. And throughout this day I am the social media specialist with Sergio, so keep an eye on the #smartee hashtag on Twitter and Instagram. On Thursday I will do the ice braker activity and I've prepared a education apps logo quiz with SMART Response and also a secret quiz ... and I will bring some prices as well! Looking forward. Begin juni ben ik met Henk-Jan naar Madrid geweest om een training van de nieuwste software SMART amp™ te volgen samen met 10 andere geselecteerde docenten uit Europa. Op de twee-daagde scholing waren docenten uit Tsjechië, Spanje, Finland, Zweden, Engeland, België, Duitsland en Nederland aanwezig en de training werd verzorgd door de ontwikkelaars van SMART amp™ uit de VS en Canada.
In Madrid zijn veel ervaringen uitgewisseld tussen de docenten, die allen met een ander onderwijssysteem werken en zijn wensen vanuit de lespraktijk geventileerd met de software ontwikkelaars. Dit waren voor zowel de docenten als de ontwikkelaars van SMART amp™ hele vruchtbare dagen en gaat SMART amp™ nog leuker en beter worden!
SMART amp™ is online software waarin leerlingen erg makkelijk samen kunnen werken binnen eenzelfde project. Je kunt het zien als een digitale poster waarin leerlingen tekst, plaatjes, filmpjes en websites kunnen toevoegen. En met elkaar kunnen overleggen via de chat functie, die door de docent ook gevolgd kan worden.
Er zitten meerdere voordelen aan het werken met SMART amp™. Eén van de voordelen is dat leerlingen er aan kunnen werken wanneer ze willen. Het enige dat nodig is om gebruik te maken van deze software zijn inloggegevens en een apparaat met een internetverbinding. Groot voordeel voor de docent is dat er met een simpele muisklik is te achterhalen wat de bijdrage is geweest van elke individuele leerling.
Binnen SMART amp™ kan je als docent ook toetsen en quizzen klaarzetten. Voor de docent biedt het de kans om veel makkelijker contacten te leggen met andere scholen (eventueel ook in het buitenland). Leerlingen van beide scholen kunnen dan in hetzelfde document werken. Ondanks de afstand en een eventueel tijdsverschil.
Vooral voor de onderbouw leerlingen is SMART amp™ zeer geschikte software om PO’s in te maken. Met de tablet en een internetverbinding kunnen ze in de school maar ook thuis werken aan de opdracht wanneer het hen uitkomt.
The promised follow up about my Global Collaboration project that was started in March, when I invited nine schools from different parts from the US. Each school was linked to a group of three students in my class and the topic was the US and together all my students gained loads of information in order to have a good geographical view on the US.
In order to collaborate I needed to create and share accounts within my domain. Within SMART amp the students could chat with each other and share the content in the workspace. Language wasn’t really an obstacle, due the fact that the English language is mandatory in the Netherlands and they could always use Google Translate. ;) The Time difference (from 5 to 9 hours) wasn’t an issue either, due to the fact that this assignment wasn’t real-time-based.
But now … I’ve learned a new cool feature in SMART amp. Workspaces could be shared with others outside the domain, but …. they will need to have a SMART amp license as well in order to open and work in the workspace-file and make it work. How about that! I really like this feature and saves me a lot of work whilst collaborating throughout the world.
When SMARTamp shifts your teaching from a teacher centered style classroom manager to a more coaching teacher and the curriculum is more student driven, perhaps rules are necessary. In order to gain learning and have respect of others’ work.
Should you be using rules when using SMARTamp in your classroom? Should these rules be created by students themselves or should they be created by the teachers? This should be considered in order to make this work I guess.
Rules when working in SMARTamp could be:
don’t touch or remove work that others created.
don’t spam the chat
don’t spam the workspace
Or from a different perspective, when you focus on the things that are allowed:
respect opinions
respect property
In my experience and opinion I think that you as a teacher should first give them time to play. ‘playtime’ is not working, but getting to know the workspace, the way SMARTamp works and have them express inappropriate language as well. They'll learn. Especially when they realize that not only you the teacher, but others in the workspace and perhaps from other countries as well. It’ll take time, be patient as a teacher and they’ll start creating their own content real soon. Make this a students centered workaround and not a teacher driven/centered thing. It’s all about pedagogy …. again.
As you could've read I'm going to the SMART amp Champ event in Madrid with other SEEs from Europe, such as Emil Waldhauser (CR), Sergio Gonzales (E), Tapani Raitanen (SF) and from the Netherlands and The SMART Showcase School I teach: Henk-Jan van Mierlo.
I do hope to gain a lot from the SMART Amp Champs workshops lead by Heather Lamb and Ainhoa Marcos. From the next school year on we will start at my school with a total of 6 classes that'll work with personal devices (Apple's iPad) and I've noticed in the past school year that SMART amp really helps and can take learning to a certain level that works perfectly with personal devices. My headmaster would love to see that more teachers will work with SMART amp, especially since we have a few power users in our school. In my opinion we could and should be an example of best practices with the use of SMART amp in classes that bring mobile devices such as iPads, Chromebooks and laptops.
In order to become an expert user I am looking forward to work with and learn from other SEEs that attend this SMART amp Champ Summit and hope to bring back a lot of new ideas, tips, tricks and tools on how to use this collaborative platform in my SMART Collaborative Classroom and throughout the school. I recently read this article in a paper(!) magazine from my bank about this new gadget: the WakaWaka. The ASN Bank is a bank that cares for the environment and invests in sustainable projects such as WakaWaka. After reading the article I was really enthusiastic about it and considered this as a must-have. WakaWaka aims to end Energy Poverty by making the worlds best sustainable solar energy solutions available and affordable to the 1.2 billion people who lack access to electricity. I really needed this WakaWaka. In the magazine was a discount code that I could use to order the WakaWaka.
I'm also fond of the buy one-give principle. When buying one, you will give one away to the people or a project that really needs it. The WakaWaka was delivered within 24 hours to my home and even the package was made of recycled material and was looking awesome. After I opened the package I immediately put my new WakaWaka in the sun to charge it and at night I used it to charge my iPhone. Great gadget and you should get one too!
Ik heb 31 eindexamenkandidaten vmbo aardrijkskunde en ik heb zojuist de eerste correctie gedaan van m'n eigen leerlingen. De leukste, meest verassende of schokkende antwoorden heb ik voor je verzameld. Feit is dat ze soms de vraag niet begrepen lijken te hebben of dat ze slecht lezen en ze soms echt(!) maar wat opschrijven ... Hieronder een greep uit de gegeven antwoorden:
Q: Geef de reden waarom juist Nederland betrokken is bij de maatregelen (dijken, vloedkeringen, pompen en andere voorzieningen) die de Amerikaanse overheid in het gebied van New Orleans neemt. A: Door de baan van Katrina zou de hurricane misschien wel kunnen keren naar Nederland en daar alles verwoesten. Nederland wordt er daarom ook bij betrokken.
Q: Het duingebied langs de Noordzeekust wordt ernstig bedreigd door de verzilting. Noem eerst de menselijke oorzaak van deze verzilting en daarna op welke wijze dit leidt tot verzilting. A: Als mensen gaan zwemmen in de zoute zee en daarna rond gaan lopen bij de duinen komt daar meer zout terecht als ze zich niet goed hebben afgedroogd.
Q: De tekst in bron 18 is positief over het Zuid-Anatoliëproject. Er worden alleen voordelen genoemd. Noem twee nadelen voor het gebied stroomafwaarts van de stuwdammen. A: Het water word er minder vruchtbaar door.
Q: Geef twee nadelige gevolgen van bevolkingskrimp voor de leefbaarheid in deze plattelandsregio's. A: Grond verslechterd. Er komen minder geboortecijfers.
But then again, als dit alles is. En dat lijkt het gelukkig. Verder ben ik best tevreden over het gemaakte werk van mijn leerlingen. Dit jaar was er een nieuw, voller en moeilijker examenprogramma en hebben ze niet overal complete onzin opgeschreven. Dat vind ik tof. Nu nog even wachten op de n-term. Keep you updated.
Zojuist ook de eerste correctie economie gedaan. En bij één vraag kwam ik ook leuke antwoorden tegen:
Q: Guatemala produceert koffie van goede kwaliteit. Gelukkig heeft Guatemala geen monocultuur. Wat is voor een land het nadeel van het hebben van een monocultuur? A1: Alleen de staat mag dingen bepalen en heeft de macht. A2: Een groot deel van de omzet moet naar de overheid. A3: Er is maar één persoon die alles bepaalt in een land en daar hebben anderen dus niks over te zeggen.
Onderwijs is de volgende 'industrie' die destructieve technologie op zich af krijgt. Destructief, omdat het oude zal verdwijnen en vervangen zal worden door het nieuwe. Het cassettebandje, de videorecorder en de dvd zijn bijvoorbeeld al vervangen door online streaming diensten als Netflix, iTunes en Spotify, welke bovendien ook nog eens op maat zijn voor de gebruiker! Een dergelijke ontwikkeling in het onderwijs vraagt een kritische kijk naar het curriculum en een creatieve manier om de content (kern- en einddoelen) te onderwijzen volgens mij.
Het Ashram College is geselecteerd en mag meedoen aan het project Leerling 2020 van de VO-raad, een lerend netwerk waar verschillende VO-scholen uit het hele land in verschillend subgroepen, de zgn. Leerlabs vertegenwoordigd zijn. Doel is het gepersonaliseerd leren binnen de deelnemende scholen te versnellen. Om dit te realiseren zijn Leerlabs gevormd waarin de scholen aan de slag gaan met de vraagstukken op het gebied van gepersonaliseerd leren. Dit kan variëren van het gebruik van digitale leermiddelen tot de rol van de docent in de klas. Ik mag namens het Ashram College mee doen aan het Leerlab 'curriculum bewustzijn' en dat vind ik erg tof. Dit past precies in mijn straatje; overleggen met andere scholen (o.a. Stad en Esch, Het Hondsrug College en het Ichtus uit Kampen), kritisch kijken naar het curriculum en tot acties komen op de eigen school, zowel vakinhoudelijk als didactisch. Ik heb daar zin in.
Als school hebben we een verdiepingsvraag geformuleerd en willen we weten wat we moeten doen om via een versnellingsvraag het proces van onderwijsvernieuwing een flinke slag te maken. Docenten worden dan bijvoorbeeld uitgedaagd methodes, digitaal lesmateriaal en eigen ontwerpen creatief in te zetten in het kader van de doelstellingen van het curriculum. Men kan dan denken aan het steeds meer loslaten van de door uitgeverijen beschikbaar gestelde methodes en dat docenten meer arrangeur en daardoor eigenaar worden van de leerlijn binnen hun vak, waarbij docenten zich terdege bewust moeten zijn wat de kern- en einddoelen van hun vak zijn en het curriculum zo invullen, dat deze gewaarborgd zullen zijn. Voorlopig is het nog zo dat we leerlingen voorbereiden op het halen van het door het Cito gemaakte Centrale Eindexamen, maar het zou mooi zijn als we door kritisch te kijken naar de kern- en einddoelen ruimte kunnen maken voor andere zaken en van de leerlingen echte wereldburgers kunnen maken. In dit Leerlab is het goed om m.b.v. de input van andere deelnemende scholen en de begeleiding door de VO-Raad tot actie komen op het Ashram College als het om curriculum bewustzijn gaat. Ik heb daar zin in.

One of the cool things is to present at education summits in order to share best practices and share ideas with others attending the summit. As you could've read in another blog post I applied to do a session about SMART amp at the Netherlands Google Apps for Education Summit this weekend and that went very well. I did prepare my presentation in English, but due to the fact that only Dutch people attended I did it in Dutch anyway. I handed out some leaflets with more information and every attendant received a SMART Board pointer. The attendants needed to log in to SMART amp with pre-created accounts by me and needed to work together in a workspace where I published a assessment as well. The teacher that gained the least score for the assessment received a SMART amp t-shirt, due to the fact that all the other teachers scored 100% on the assessment.
On Sunday we we started with a real good Keynote by Dan Leighton (Director of Technology, Grammar School of Leeds) about effective strategies in the classroom to gain more engaged students and higher grades. Top two things concerning was he impact of good feedback (formative evaluation) to students and and meta-cognition (self reported grades). I need to process on this ...
The first session was getting more out of the admin console with Google Admin within your domain. I've learned a lot of things and Sarah Woods really took my understanding of working within the admin console to the next level. I'm very happy that I learned a lot today already. Next was the session of Warren Apel with easy to use tips and tricks on how to create engaging activities with Google Maps in your classroom. This was really mind bowing and I've shared a few interesting links in this blog and will create a new one about the cool things you can do with My Maps in Google Maps.
This Google Apps for Education Summit was awesome and I do have a lot to take with me and need to process on!!!

Cool fun fact that I learned: did you know that when you need to type something unreadable when signing in somewhere, the so called captcha thing, is actually really cool and whenever you use it you' helping out humanity by helping to save our own ancient cultures? These hardly readable things we need to re-type are actually pieces of text from ancient written text and we ar actually helping out to translate them. And the blurry pictures of street numbers we need to re-write are actually from pictures Google Street View took and we help out by mapping the world better. Ain't that just awesome?
Yes!!!!!!!! I'm going to the best PD Summit that I know of ... again. This. Is. Epic.
A month ago I applied to be a peer-mentor at the next Global SEE Summit at head office of SMART Technologies in Calgary - Alberta, Canada. Yesterday the SEEs that applied were notified through a webinar, organized by the Global Advocacy Team of SMART Technologies, if they were invited to attend the Global SEE Summit during the summer 2015. And yes, I'm in and I am very happy!
I'm also very honored to be with a large group of teachers and learn with and from them in order to redefine the way the world (well, at least in my school) learns. I'm very excited and am going to the Summit with my colleague Henk-Jan van Mierlo from the SMART Showcase School - Ashram College we both teach.
I recently submitted a session about SMART amp to the Netherlands Google Apps for Education Summit, because I really wanted to attend this summit and I even liked the fact more that I could share my experience about this new platform, which engages students to really collaborate with each other. I've been using this for the past half year or so in a few of my classes in a self created domain, to gain access to Google Apps for Education. My students have gained a new e-mail address and access to SMART amp. In- and outside the classroom I can really see the power of SMART amp and I have even shared logins with schools from abroad to give them access to the workspaces my students are working in.

And it's getting better, because next month I will be joining 12 other SMART Exemplary Educators from Europe to attend an exciting new program for SEEs called Amp Champs! As a member of this elite group, we will receive a two day advanced SMART amp training in Madrid, Spain and support. This is really awesome! I will meet and learn with and from the best SEEs from Europe such as Emil Waldhauser (Czech Republic) , Gonzalo Garcia (Spain), Serigio Cabezas (Spain), Tapani Raitanen (Finland) and our teacher and mentor Heather Lamb (Texas, US).
