SMART amp Champs expectations

As you could've read I'm going to the SMART amp Champ event in Madrid with other SEEs from Europe, such as Emil Waldhauser (CR), Sergio Gonzales (E), Tapani Raitanen (SF) and from the Netherlands and The SMART Showcase School I teach: Henk-Jan van Mierlo.

I do hope to gain a lot from the SMART Amp Champs workshops lead by Heather Lamb and Ainhoa Marcos. From the next school year on we will start at my school with a total of 6 classes that'll work with personal devices (Apple's iPad) and I've noticed in the past school year that SMART amp really helps and can take learning to a certain level that works perfectly with personal devices. My headmaster would love to see that more teachers will work with SMART amp, especially since we have a few power users in our school. In my opinion we could and should be an example of best practices with the use of SMART amp in classes that bring mobile devices such as iPads, Chromebooks and laptops.

In order to become an expert user I am looking forward to work with and learn from other SEEs that attend this SMART amp Champ Summit and hope to bring back a lot of new ideas, tips, tricks and tools on how to use this collaborative platform in my SMART Collaborative Classroom and throughout the school. I will keep you posted!

Global SEE Summit 2015

Yes!!!!!!!! I'm going to the best PD Summit that I know of ... again. This. Is. Epic.

A month ago I applied to be a peer-mentor at the next Global SEE Summit at head office of SMART Technologies in Calgary - Alberta, Canada. Yesterday the SEEs that applied were notified through a webinar, organized by the Global Advocacy Team of SMART Technologies, if they were invited to attend the Global SEE Summit during the summer 2015. And yes, I'm in and I am very happy!

I'm also very honored to be with a large group of teachers and learn with and from them in order to redefine the way the world (well, at least in my school) learns. I'm very excited and am going to the Summit with my colleague Henk-Jan van Mierlo from the SMART Showcase School - Ashram College we both teach.

SMART amp Champ!

I recently submitted a session about SMART amp to the Netherlands Google Apps for Education Summit, because I really wanted to attend this summit and I even liked the fact more that I could share my experience about this new platform, which engages students to really collaborate with each other. I've been using this for the past half year or so in a few of my classes in a self created domain, to gain access to Google Apps for Education. My students have gained a new e-mail address and access to SMART amp. In- and outside the classroom I can really see the power of SMART amp and I have even shared logins with schools from abroad to give them access to the workspaces my students are working in.

Workspace of my students and students from Orland Park Junior High (IL)

Now I have the privilege to share the how to and my best practices with SMART amp tomorrow at the gafe-summit. I'm really looking forward to it. My presentation is for sharing, the workspace the attendees will be working in tomorrow not.

And it's getting better, because next month I will be joining 12 other SMART Exemplary Educators from Europe to attend an exciting new program for SEEs called Amp Champs! As a member of this elite group, we will receive a two day advanced SMART amp training in Madrid, Spain and support. This is really awesome! I will meet and learn with and from the best SEEs from Europe such as Emil Waldhauser (Czech Republic) , Gonzalo Garcia (Spain), Serigio Cabezas (Spain), Tapani Raitanen (Finland) and our teacher and mentor Heather Lamb (Texas, US). Looking forward and will share my experience in Madrid on this blog ...

Generosity of SMART Technologies

A shout-out to SMART Technologies for their generous act by handing out a full license of SMART Notebook 14 to one of my students. This particular student is one of my exam students and is handicapped and has very limited motor skills and he's not able to write and/or use his arms and legs properly. He is able to use a laptop computer during his exams and by law it is permitted that he uses a few software programs such as MS Word, Excel and a snapping tool to copy the things he created in one program to another. Now both his math teacher and the student himself dropped the idea of using SMART Notebook, because of the drawing functionality and the GeoGebra add-on. I send an email to Deena and Ainhoa and responded with a positive reply. How about that! Besides the fact that it's very nice that SMART granted my student with the software, I particularly like the fact that this student benefits from using Notebook and the GeoGebra add-on with his disability of writing and drawing.

Fred van Dijke - math teacher of my student: "Lesley has diplegia spastic infantile and has fewer features, among others in his left arm and shoulder. His entire coordination and fine motor skills are in such a state that it is very difficult for him to write and draw. In mathematics, the exam requires to make drawings. When he works in SMART Notebook can he simply put the drawings from the exam in SMART Notebook (Snapping Tool) as add other things as well."

Reply of Ainhoa Marcos (SMART Technologies) to my request: "I´ll be happy to provide you with the license, I´ll just ask you to write an EdCompass blog, video, or any other content about the experience, as I think is an amazing one. I´ll come back to you soon with the license ..."

As Lesley responds to working with SMART Notebook 14: "I am very happy with the program SMART Notebook. It was intended for my math drawings, but I also can use it with other subjects to draw and create schedules. It takes me a little longer to create drawings because it's such a large and comprehensive program, but in this case it is a good thing because I need less different programs. At the beginning I needed to discover how everything works, but once I knew how it worked, it is working very good for me. All that I used is now in just one program. If I have I do not have the copy-paste to other software anymore. I could not draw in depth, but with the pre-created pages in Notebook I can now also draw in a three-dimensional coordinate system. Very often I had to tell my teacher that I couldn't do such things, but now I can. Until now I haven't come across anything that I miss in the program. With SMART Notebook I can improve my skills."

And SMART Exemplary Educator Gonzalo Garcia responded to our story: "One of the best features of SMART solutions is the ability they have to help attention to diversity inside and outside the classroom. And this is another example of the commitment of SMART with Education in capital letters."

St. Mathew Academy success story

Due to the fact that the #gafesummit was cut down to just one day, I had an extra in London. On the website of SMART Technologies I searched if there was a SMART Showcase School in London to visit, among other interesting things to do. And actually there was one and via Twitter I got in touch with the principal of St. Matthew Academy Mr. Michael Barry and he replied that I was more than welcome to pay a visit. Via email I explained why I wanted to visit the school and while I was there the school provided me a guided tour, lunch in the school cantina and a wifi connection to get some other work done after the visit. Mr. Barry trusted me enough to offer me his office to work a little (Tweet, blog, check in for flight home and email), while he was away, how nice is that.

During the guided tour which was done by a too modest student, I was allowed to take pictures, ask loads of questions and had a chat with a few teachers. I was particularly interested in the subject geography and its curriculum, the way computers, devices and Raspberry Pi was being used and of course the in the use of the SMART Boards. After all St. Matthew Academy was a SMART Showcase School. The school did not encourage students to bring their own device or provide mobile devices yet, as I believe that is part of the roadmap for the upcoming years. So no information to gain from the school on how they were using mobile devices.
During the tour I witnessed a geography lesson and talked to the teacher, whom explained to me that she did not use books, students didn't have books and she created her own different assignments to differentiate in her lesson. Some students were brighter than others, or could handle more lesson content than others. They were working individually on creating a geography newspaper about the storms on the coast. I liked that very much, because the students could be creative and it was all about their own community. When the teacher needed to explain something about physical geography, she used school books that remained in the classroom. This particular teacher was the right teacher for the group of students that attend this school. I would love to see her and her students using mobile devices and/or web 2.0-tools for her designed assignments.
Another thing I really liked was that coding was in the curriculum of ICT and that the school had began with the Raspberry Pi this year. Attached to each monitor in the computerroom was also a Raspberry Pi besides a regular Windows 8 computer. The students need to learn how to code and program a small computer such as the Raspberry Pi. In another computer room there were lots of iMac computers to work on. Great!

Media was a subject taught at this school as well. There is a film-club, film and photo shoot room with green screen and they produce a lot of movies and films and join lots of competitions and also won a few (lots?). With the iMac room and all this looked very professional and this is probably the most professional one that I've seen in secondary education. And you could tell by the enthusiasm of the students that they were engaged by this and how this subject is being taught in school.

After the tour I had another chat with the principal and the head of the secondary school and they asked me very good questions. They asked what I thought was good and asked me was I thought was not good. I explained that from the first few steps that I took in the school I immediately noticed that this school was student centered. At the exception the lady was first helping out the student that came in after me before she attended me. Same sort of atmosphere I felt at some schools while I was in Finland visiting schools. I also mentioned the matters from above. The one thing that could be better in my opinion was the use of SMART Notebook. That interactive whiteboard software could and should be used way more often to enhance interactivity in the classroom instead of showing Powerpoint presentations. Perhaps I could do some training next time I'm around. ;) Anyway, you'd best check it out for yourself and witness several success stories from this school by principal Michael Barry.

SMART Bridgit try-out/SMART Bridgit Vyzkoušejte

AV-Media (distributor of SMART products in Czech Republic) planned a guided tour for headmasters and it-coordinators from the Czech Republic to the Netherlands and Belgium to visit two SMART Showcase schools and the IPON 2014 (Education technology trade show in the Netherlands). This large group of nearly 40 people visited our school. Attendees were interested in the way we teach in the Netherlands in general and specifically at our school as a SMART Showcase School, they were also interested in the SMART Collaborative Classroom and how it's being used and some other topics such as the standardized curriculum and BYOD. Me, the headmaster and some students provided the large group a welcome and a inspiring day as we were told later on. This tour was mainly managed by my friend and colleague SMART Exemplary Educator Emil Waldhauser from the Czech Republic whom also had to translate from English to Czech back and forth. After the welcome and presentation by my headmaster the guests from the Czech Republic were guided by students through the school and attended some lessons, while Emil and I were did a twinning teach-session in my class about culture, identity and nationalism. Emil was very easily accepted by my students and they could easily follow his lesson about the life behind the iron curtain back in the days. During the next lesson all(!) the Czech guests were invited in my SMART Collaborative Classroom to witness the way I teach and use the SMART Boards to do some collaborative learning. Is was chaotic, but good to see that my students were able to do their job while watched by 40 adults who did communicate in a foreign language.

Me presenting about the SMART Showcase School

Emil teaching in the SMART Collaborative Classroom

During this tour I met some new interesting people and František Rada and me  agreed on doing some more collaborative learning together. One of the attendees was a headmaster from a secondary school - Základní škola - from Prague and he asked me if I would like to help him in the near future with setting up a Bridgit session. The school was about to use SMART Bridgit in the very near future and they had invited the press (both newspaper and television) and he wanted to show what could be done with SMART Bridgit in the classroom and that my classroom in the Netherlands was just two clicks away.

Starting up the Bridgit session in Prague, Czech Republic.

I totally forgot the time on the day we were supposed to meet, so he called me on my cell phone and I immediately called in on SMART Bridgit and we were online for a few minutes. He prepared an activity for me and my class and it went great! Awesome. The press was present and by clicking the links you can see some of the video content while I did the Bridgit session and you can even see me and a glimpse of my classroom on the Czech (time 21:22) … How cool is that!

Ashram College - SMART Collaborative Classroom

SMART Collaborative Classroom

Yes! I'm one of the selected SMART Exemplary Educators in Europe to have my classroom transformed to a SMART Collaborative Classroom. In North-America there are already 20 classrooms leveled up to a SMART Collaborative Classroom, while in Europe an additional 6 classrooms will be transformed in a SCC. Four in the UK, one in Germany and one at my school.

People from SMART Technologies have visited the school I work to inspect my classroom and to discuss with the headmaster what it meant in being selected for this awesome new thing and what SMART would want in return. And even those conditions were good for me as a teacher and good for the school, since others could use the classroom as well and get the opportunity to use the latest technology from SMART all in one classroom.

We agreed on two new 600-series dual touch SMART Boards and one SMART E-70 touch panel, the new SMART 450 Doc. Cam. and loads of software to be installed and used in the classroom by the teachers and of course the students such as SMART Bridgit, SMART Response VE and SMART Notebook for iPad. Unfortunately no new SMART table for me, since the table is primarily designed for primary education and not for the students in secondary education. Unfortunately because in my opinion the new table could be used in secondary education as well, if the content is available. In this case 'unfortunately', because I would be more than happy to create the missing content for this table.
One other favor to do in return was that my school would lend me out to present at BETT in London, UK and share my experience about global collaboration and working with collaborative assessments for my students in my classroom. That is something that I really like, can and want to do!
In the meanwhile I've created an Instagram account where I will share pictures of students working in my SMART Collaborative Classroom and have even added my classroom on Foursquare to let students check in and share their thoughts about room 225. I do hope to see you at BETT!

Professional Development

During the past school year me and my students did a lot of collaboration with school classes from abroad (United States, Turkey, Russia, Czech Republic and others) using tech tools as SMART Bridgit, Skype, FaceTime and LogMeIn. We also used Facebook at school for learning purposes and especially during intern of the students. I was at BETT 2013 and met a few SEEs from Canada, Spain, the UK and Finland at the SMART Booth and did a Learn Live session about the use of social media in the curriculum.
The past school year I did the post-university study IT-coordinator at ICT+E and graduated last June. So from the next school year on I will be the IT-coordinator for SMART Showcase School Ashram College as well. Lots of things to do the next school year in getting ourselves and the students 21st century ready. ;)

In order to take the next step in becoming a Guerrilla Geography Tech Ninja teaching like a Pirate (thanks to Danesa Jepson, Rafranz Davis and Daniel Raven-Ellison for the inspiration) I need to do some professional development this summer to transform a little more the way I teach. I know I'm good with educational technology from SMART Technologies such as the SMART Board and Response system and Apple technology such as iPad, but I am looking for more and new stuff to add to the way I teach (and learn). Especially this summer, because next school year we will have WiFi for all students and will start with BYOD. So besides the common used mobile applications such as SMART Response VE, eXtreme Collaboration, Twitter, Socrative etc. which could be used even more often while there's WiFi for every student I will need to get out more of my comfort zone and start to look more into these 'tools' mentioned, because I really want to use them the next school year. I also will need to work on the list of Twitter favorites, because I've got a 1000+. :)

Nearpod: Presentations enriched with short movies, polls, questions, animations and other digital content created by the teacher can be followed by the students on their iPad in their own time or by following the preset order of the teacher.

Edmodo: It's the Facebook of education and seems to work as an Learning Manegement System (or in Dutch elo: electronische leeromgeving) which includes assignments, polls, quizzes, agenda etc. Kinda cool and could be used for students during their intern or a special environment for projects etc.

iBooks Author: Have been creating content on the SMART Notebook platform and want to take the next step and create content for the students or their personal device ... I know it should be on the iPad, but we'll work on that. Perhaps for all the teachers at my school at first, because they'll have an iPad next shool year.

Sophia: Professional development organisation with free subscription. Teacher tools and resources for free. All in English, in that case not really an option for my students, but nice for teachers like me.

ForAllBadges: As a great fan of the badges one could gain or earn using Foursquare I really like this badge rewarding system for students. Earning badges for special tasks, tests, assignments and other even group things could be helpful to boost their motivation. I've already created 40 different badges for the next school year for my students and there's even a 'badge developer-badge' for great ideas of students themselves. And also great fact that there's an app for different devices.

I surley will keep you posted about my development and the outcome and use of these tools the next school year. It's a pity there was no SEE Summit in North-America nor in EMEA. I do like conferences and will be present at Kennisnet Summerschool at 27th and 28th of August, which I will attend with other SEEs from Ashram College Henk-Jan van Mierlo and Sander van der Zwaan. I will also go on a study trip 'Finland Calling' to Helsinki, Finland from September 22nd till 28th with the headmaster of my school to study the Finnish education system and to collaborate with the other attendees. And this next year I will be looking more into mobile learning (and teaching) especially using the iPad, because all teachers at SMART Showcase School Ashram College will get an iPad! How awesome is that.

eXtreme Collaboration

The Big QR-Game

- eXtreme Collaboration add-on voor SMART Notebook

Anderen hadden zelf contact gezocht met o.a.

OVAC Thema-avond Social Media

Learn Live Session - Social Media

As a follow up of my presentation at BETT 2013 I was asked by NAACE, an educational IT organisation in the UK if I could write an article about the use of social media in my curriculum to inspire other teachers in the UK (and around the globe). Due to the fact that my article is for members of Naace only, I'm posting it also here on my blog. Enjoy.

SMART Exemplary Educator Boris Berlijn has been teaching geography since 1998 in secondary education in the Netherlands. He currently teaches at a SMART Showcase School called Ashram College in Alphen aan den Rijn. He also received a SMART Certified Trainer license in 2008 and is currently completing the SMART Certified Lesson Developer course.
In 2011, Berlijn became an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) and attended the ADE institute in London. In the summer of 2011, he was also invited to attend the third annual North American SEE Summit in Calgary, Canada and he was also attending the first annual EMEA SEE Summit as a peer mentor in Hamburg, Germany in the summer of 2012. He presented about the use of social media in the curriculum at the EMEA SEE Summit in Hamburg, Germany and at BETT 2013 in London, UK. Boris is also co-writer of book 2.0-webtools and social media (in education) and has created this book (and iPad app) with 200 other co-writers.

Boris Berlijn presenting at BETT 2013

Besides the fact that Twitter, Facebook and Google+ are being used as professional networks by Boris to get in touch with and collaborate with teachers from around the world, Boris tends to use a lot of web 2.0-tools and especially social media in the geography curriculum at his school. Social media and internet is part of the curriculum now. The presentation at BETT 2013 discussed how to be creative using tools other than the usual text books that we are so used to using in the classroom. There are other, up-to-date ways to get to that same goal, while also engaging students more than ever, such as social media in- and outside the classroom.

At the Ashram College they were interested in using social media during the students’ intern. The school and teachers wanted to know if the students would gain more during intern when working in Facebook groups. Both the students and teachers experienced that. Small amounts of information in a short time schedule is a nice way to work with students. They did get instant feedback from the teachers and their peers and they had the opportunity to like and comment on others' posts and could get inspired by others, while  reading their daily reports and looking at the pictures they took at their work during intern.

Working in Facebook groups with students to share and collaborate content could be used in regular subjects as well. For example in geography, where students go outside in small groups and take stills from anything matching the subject. They need to share the photos they took on Facebook in an album and set the privacy settings to public, to make sure that whilst not being a friend, everybody can see and comment on the photo’s in the album. Students as a group and not individually, because there might be students whose parents won’t allow their children on Facebook and that should not withhold the students from good grades. As for the short films the students have created about their own city, such as the #urban100, an assignment about mapping their own environment in 100 stills compiled in a short stop-motion video, should be shared on YouTube and Twitter.
Students using mobile devices and social media on a field trip

For different types of groups and goals Boris has been using different Twitter accounts for the past two years. As a geography teacher one for the lower classes (@ashram_boris) and one for the exams class (@4vmbo_ak) and one especially as a mentor for his own class and their parents (@Boris_3Mb). His students need to follow either one of these proffesional accounts to gain access to information they need. Besides providing tips and tricks concerning their exams Boris also askes questions about the curriculum of the exams program to his students and if answered right they can earn extra points, which they can add to their tests throughout the school year.

If they have closed Twitter accounts, nobody can see their tweets, including Boris, so they will have to set their tweets to public, otherwise they cannot collaborate with the teacher or contribute to the curriculum. Boris finds this especially interesting, because when they are on a field trip the students are far more eager to earn those extra points and will tweet a lot about the topic of that day using the correct hashtag. And as you may have guessed: some are enthusiastic, some are not.

In 2010 Boris and his colleague Barbara Schelberg were worried about the digital footprint of their teenagers and would like to give their students some insight in this matter, because when looking at the things teenagers post in public on the internet, teenagers are less aware of their digital footprint. At secondary education school where Boris works, the students in the first and second class get to choose their subject within certain boundaries (besides the standard subjects such as English, math etc.). If they choose ‘mondo’ (everything concerning global Citizenship) their curriculum is filled with the use of social media. Boris has created the curriculum with this collegue of his, and it contains a wide variety things about social media. For instance, they will have to create a short video (66 sec.) about themselves connected to the internet and at the end of the school year the input of the students is very important in the protocol about the use of mobile devices and the use of social media. They will learn to work with social media and other web 2.0-tools. They will learn how to google and create content online. He thinks it’s really nice, but Boris is just reaching a small group of students. The curriculum of this subject is not available for every class in school.
Boris presenting at SMART Summit

Next, Boris Berlijn is searching for a way to further integrate his contacts from abroad into the curriculum. He’ll be starting with his SMART friends from abroad (Novosibirsk in Russia, Chicago in Illinois and Istanbul in Turkey). At this moment one of his classes is collaborating with SEEs (and their pupils) from the United States. The students have made contact with very special people who really try to make the difference for his students. The students use e-mail, Skype and Facebook to get in touch with students in classes run by American SEEs and they really like this way of gaining information for their assessments.

Boris does not follow any of his students on Twitter nor is he friends with them on Facebook. Besides the fact that it’s not ok to be ‘friends’ for a teacher with his students -  concerning the informational boundaries to get that close and personal - the information stream on the social media platforms is way too much to follow through and 99% of the time very uninteresting. Boris’ students will have to follow him on the special created Twitter accounts or specially created Facebook groups to get in touch with him and the curriculum whilst he doesn’t need to be ‘friends’ or privatly connected with his students.
Boris tips that if you want to use social media, you should get in touch with the parents and and see how they feel. They do have an opinion and together teachers and parents get learn from eachother to improve the social media skills of the teenagers.

I love my job!
