Gastcollege in Paramaribo, Suriname

Na de eerste kennismaking in real life met Celestine Weidum - coördinator en docent van de faculteit aardrijkskunde aan de IOL, is het verzoek of ik nog meer op de basis wil gaan zitten. Afhankelijk van de aanwezigheid van tablets of laptops ga ik SMART amp™ inzetten of juist niet. De studenten zijn bekend met het presentatieprogramma Powerpoint en veel meer kennis van tools hebben ze niet. Als de studenten nu een digitale presentatie maken is dat altijd een Powerpoint en ik neem me voor om de webbased oplossingen Prezi en Google Slides te laten zien en natuurlijk als voorbereiding op het SMART Board wat het instituut gaat krijgen ga ik ook SMART Notebook laten zien.
Verder staat op het programma Socrative, Kahoot, Google Maps (MyMaps), answergarden en ga ik Aurasma laten zien adhv het werk van een leerling uit 2-vmbo.

Opstartproblemen met wifi toegang, de beamer, etc. zijn hier ook niet vreemd. In de zaal zitten meer dan 50 mensen, de meeste studenten en een paar docenten. Iets later dan gepland gaan we toch van start. Met een beperkte wifi-toegang, maar gelukkig heb ik m'n iPhone bij me met een internetabonnement voor in het buitenland, zodat die als hotspot dient zodra de verbinding wegvalt. Toegang tot internet is nl. wel een must, aangezien ik een Google Presentation heb gemaakt en gebruik ga maken van heel veel online tools.

De studenten doen actief mee - voor zover de internettoegang dat toelaat - en vullen wat Google Forms in, delen hun bijdrage in answergarden, zijn super-enthousiast over Kahoot en maken in groepjes een door mij voorbereide vragenlijst m.b.v. Socrative. De meegenomen Bosatlassen komen meteen van pas en ik laat op het projectiescherm de docententool zien, terwijl de studenten aan de slag zijn met het beantwoorden van de atlasvragen in Socrative.

Voor alle studenten heb ik een sticker van het Global Teenager Project en maak een beetje reclame voor deze organisatie en heb de hoop dat de studenten aardrijkskunde ook erg enthousiast worden. De dag ervoor ook nog gesproken met Miriam Weekers, de contactpersoon voor het Global Teenager Project in Suriname, dat het toevoegen van het culturele erfgoed voor jongeren in Suriname én Nederland als onderwerp aan de Learning Circles - naast de kinderrechten - heel goed zou zijn. Ze is ook aanwezig om het e.e.a. aan te vullen en de agenda digitale leermiddelen en cultureel erfgoed Suriname op de agenda te zetten.

Celestine en ik sluiten samen af om aan te kondigen dat de gebruikte Bosatlassen een gift zijn van het Ashram College en dat er zsm een SMART Board interactive flatpanel aan het IOL - faculteit aardrijkskunde - wordt gedoneerd door SMART Technologies. Van de studenten krijgen we een applaus, ze nemen de tijd om me te bedanken voor de avond en enkele studenten willen met me op de foto of willen een selfie met mij. Daar maak ik graag tijd voor. :) En het verzoek om snel weer terug te komen en ze nog meer te laten zien en te leren klinkt als muziek in mijn oren en heb ik veel zin in. En ook daar maak ik graag tijd voor. Als dank krijg ik nog een kado: een maron kunstwerk. Ben ik heel erg blij mee!

Wereldburgerschap

Het tweede jaar op rij dat ik bij het keuzeprogramma mondo op het Ashram College aan internationalisering heb gedaan vanuit eigen opgestarte projecten en het Global Teenager Project met Learning Circles over de rechten van het kind. Op eigen initiatief hebben we contact gehad met een schoolklas in Tsjechië via Skype en een met een schoolklas in Rusland via SMART amp™. En tijdens de Learning Circles met schoolklassen in Nederland en Suriname via een wiki. Het was leuk om een kijkje in de keuken te nemen bij een ander, maar ik ben van plan om dit structureler en meer in het curriculum te stoppen volgend schooljaar. De cherries on top waren het bezoek aan Gymnazium Zikmunda Wintra in Rakovnik, Tsjechië met 8 leerlingen en het bezoek aan Lycée Warocqué in Morlanwelz, België met alle mondo leerlingen.

Aan het begin van het schooljaar heb ik aan alle leerlingen gevraagd wat zij onder mondo oftewel wereldburgerschap verstonden. De leukste, beste en de meest treffende heb ik hieronder verzameld:

• Wereldburgerschap is dat je goed omgaat met de wereld en de mensen om je heen. 

• Wereldburgerschap is dat een mens iets goed doet voor de samenleving en dat hij of zij de wereld een kleinbeetje beter maakt. 

• Wereldburgerschap betekent voor ons goed zijn voor de mensen en dieren om je heen, goed voor de wereld zorgen en niet vervuilen. De wereldburgers die er zijn geweest of bestaan zijn bijv: Ghandi, Mandela, Vrijwilligers,  mensenrechtenactivisten en nog veel meer andere mensen die zich op een positieve manier de aarde hebben geholpen en mensen in ontwikkelingslanden.

• Wereldburgerschap is voor elkaar klaar staan er voor elkaar zijn om een multiculturele samenleving te worden. In deze wereld moeten we er voor elkaar zijn zoals de daklozen eten geven of een rommelig strand opruimen. 

• Wereldburgerschap betekent onder andere dat je iedereen gelijk behandeld en dat je ook interesse toont in andere culturen/samenlevingen, dat je met z'n allen één wereld bent en niet apart van elkaar. Op school hebben we bepaalde vakken waar je meer te weten komt over andere culturen en samenlevingen en omdat je zoveel verschillende kinderen in de klas hebt kan iedereen er wat over vertellen en begrijp je elkaar meer.

Op stap met mondo-groep 2G1

Nadat een groep leerlingen van Gymnazium Zikmunda Wintra uit Rakovnik, Tsjechië is langs geweest op het Ashram College om o.a. samen te werken met mondo-groep 2G1 aan het project over de verdeling van de armoede over de wereld, is deze mondo-groep uitgenodigd door Emil Waldhauser om een kijkje te nemen bij hen op school in Tsjechië. Daar hadden de leerlingen wel oor naar en zijn - nadat de datum waarop we wilden vertrekken bekend werd - allerlei zaken op gaan zoeken mbt de te ondernemen reis. Één leerling had een hele mooie brief naar de directie gestuurd om toestemming te vragen voor de reis en het uitwisselingsproject, omdat de leerlingen en de begeleiding (ik en collega Marije) een schooldag zouden moeten missen. Die schooldag hebben we dan wel op het Ashram College gemist, maar door de aanwezigheid op de middelbare school in Rakovnik en alle nieuwe ervaringen als gastgezinnen, vliegen, vreemde talen, veel openbaar vervoer, rekenen met vreemde valuta en eten en drinken hebben de leerlingen naar mijn mening meer geleerd dan de gemiste dag op hun eigen school.

De volgende paragraaf kwam o.a. uit de brief van Yenna (namens de hele groep) aan de directrice:
"Wij zien dit als een leerzame reis. We gaan veel leren over onderwijs in een ander land. En omdat wij geen Tsjechisch kunnen en we bij gastgezinnen overnachten zullen we dus ook Engels moeten spreken. Natuurlijk wordt het ook een gezellige reis en zullen we veel foto's maken en stukken schrijven, zodat als we weer terug zijn in Nederland wij onze leerzame reis kunnen delen met klasgenoten, docenten en met u. Wij hebben er heel veel zin in en hopen dat u het een goed plan vindt."

In Rakovnik zaten de leerlingen in gastgezinnen die, zo ik heb begrepen uit de verhalen van de kinderen, bijzonder gastvrij waren en zich geheel hebben ingezet om het onze leerlingen naar de zin te maken. Op school hebben de leerlingen een muziekles en een scheikundeles bijgewoond, een museumbezoek ondernomen en hebben ze gedurende twee lesuren met de Tsjechische groep samengewerkt via het samenwerkingsplatform SMARTamp aan opdrachten voor de Engelstalige Learning Circle over kinderrechten in de wereld. Dit hebben ze afgesloten met een korte presentatie, die uiteraard in het Engels moest. Meer daarover via [blog vermelden]. Aan het eind van de dag zijn we naar Kasteel Krivoklad geweest voor een rondleiding en wat geschiedenis van de omgeving. Heel leuk!

Zaterdag hadden we een dagje Praag en hebben we naast het shoppen een stadswandeling gemaakt over de verschillende winkelstraten, het Jan Hus plein, de Karelsbrug, de John Lennon muur en een toren beklommen. Helaas hadden we de vlucht naar huis gemist, dus moesten we een extra overnachting regelen om pas de volgende dag naar huis te vertrekken. Emil heeft voor ons in de buurt van de luchthaven een studentenhotel gereserveerd, welke in typische Oostblok-stijl verkeerde. Ook hier weer gaven de leerlingen geen krimp en hebben ze zich vooral vermaakt. Super! De leerlingen hebben gedurende de afgelopen drie dagen heel veel nieuwe ervaringen op gedaan en zijn weer een flinke stap dichterbij het wereldburgerschap.

World Citizenship

Since a few years I'm teaching this subject in the second class at my secondary school besides geography and economics. There's no standardized curriculum and there are no basic (stated as mandatory by the government) goals with this elective subject. That means that me and my colleagues can pick whatever we think that'll fit within the region of this world citizenship thing. 

During the Global SEE Summit in Calgary I prepared the questions for the twitter chat with Rafranz Davis and the topic was Global Awareness and I guess that covers in my opinion the new subject I teach: World Citizenship (mondo as it's called at my school in the Netherlands). These were the main questions that we asked during the twitter chat: 

- How can we create lessons that better prepare kids to be globally prepared?

- What do you think is most important to teach concerning world citizenship?

- How do we maintain global awareness in learning?

During this twitter chat we tried to get ourselves and other teachers to think about these questions and come up with some answers. Even for us as teachers we need to be an example for our students and therefore it's almost mandatory that we add some global awareness to the curriculum. Wouldn't you agree? Especially with the state of the world at this moment, such as the airplane with civilians shot from the air above Ukraine, ISIS in Iraq, civil war in Syria, conflict between the Israeli and the Palestine people, Russia and it's foreign policy, Global Warming, Ebola virus in Africa, child and slave labour during sports tournaments such as the Olympics and World Championships, natural disasters in China and so on.
Due to the amount of information and access to this information, students get faced with too many different views. In that case it's importend that a trustworthy and reliable person as the teacher is able to help his students to verify and narrow down these information stream, in order to let the student be able to create an opinion of their own.

Global Awareness: people nowadays need to be aware and know at least something about it, to create an opinion of their own on these matters. Since the internet the world is connected and it's not about our own street, city or community anymore. From this point of view I think that we need to get our students globally connected. I know that I will. Not only during this new subject I teach, but also in my standardized curriculum with geography and economics. I've got a few plans to connect my classroom with school classes in New Brunswick-Canada, Novosibirsk-Russia, Rakovnik-Czech Republic, Orland Park/USA and am trying to connect to Kenya-Africa. With the classes that I teach about global citizenship we'll be joining the Global Teenager Project again and will connect with schools in Surinam, Curaçao and hopefully many more. 

This week I was asked if digital citizenship should be part of this world citizenship. I think yes, and will blog about that later this week. And would like if you shared your opinion as well.

Broken Toyz

Allen pointed out this morning the following statement and I must say that I agreed on this one. "Who is crazy enough to present after a night out with Broken Toyz?" Well, it was my turn today so I guess I'm crazy enough. This morning wasn't going very well and I had little trouble with the mild headache and little sleep I had the past night. Anyway, I was up and was about to do two presentations today! One with Kate Seward (whom I met at the Summit in 2011 and I have been collaborating with the past school year) and one on my own about Global Collaboration. This was also the day that my eldest daughter Faye was about to turn eight and whilst following up on the news about the MH17 flight that was shot down from the sky above Ukraine last week, this day was a national day of mourning in the Netherlands because of that.

The topic of today was 'It takes a teacher to grow global understanding' and my presentation and how to set this up in your class room was due today. We started with an open discussion about SMART amp lead by Erica Arnoldin concerning our experience with amp after the SMART amp camp from yesterday. After that the whole group could ask questions to the developers team and loads of requests and feedback was released from the SEEs. I was kinda worried that a lot of requests were about the fact that powerful tools from Notebook should be added in amp, but in my opinion that's not a good thing. Notebook is mainly a teachers tools, where amp is a collaboration tool for students and they shouldn't be the ending up the same. That's all I can say about these NDA sessions.
After the lunch break and before my workshop about Global Collaboration, there were some small presentation of SEEs that have already done some Global Collaboration just to inspire the whole team of SEEs and prepare them for the workshop later this day.

The first presentation I did together with Kate while she was not present at SMART Technologies HQ, but called in from her home address using Bridgit. We'd created a Notebook-file together prior to the summit and showed and shared our experience with our colleague SEEs (present and the ones that joined in via Bridgit) just as Bob, Giovanna, Maria and Chris. We did a great job (well, mainly Kate, because I was still suffering from the Broken Toyz thing ...). And after this show the Global Collaboration 'how to' was on. I had about 90 minutes and the SEEs needed to work and collaborate with each other in small groups that were lead by an EMEA SEE, so there were 24 small groups. The outcome was a Global Collaboration lesson plan for the next school year and needed to be shared in the Gold Star SEE platform. There were some good things going on and I got a lot of positive feedback on my presentation. The SEEs were very happy to work in smaller groups on hands-on assignments. It turned out to be a good day after all.
During the day I interviewed a few SEEs that I have worked with the past year and asked them what was the main benefit from doing such a project. And did I use eXtreme Collaboration? Oh yes I did!

Professional development 2014-2015

During the past school year me and my students did a lot of collaboration with school classes from abroad (United States, Surinam, Curacao, Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia) using tech tools as SMART Bridgit and Skype. I was at BETT 2014 in London, UK and met a few SEEs from Canada, Spain, the UK and Finland and did a few sessions at the SMART Collaborative Classroom and did a session about the use of social media in the classroom at the biggest social media and education summit in Amsterdam. I went on a study trip 'Finland Calling' to Helsinki, Finland from September 22nd till 28th 2013 with the headmaster of my school to have a closer look at the Finnish education system and to gain more about differentiation in the classroom. And from december 2013 my classroom was transformed into a SMART Collaborative Classroom and I have tried a lot new ways to engage students more to cooperate and collaborate with each other whilst using the SMART Boards. I also want to focus on BYOD for students, because since a few months our school has WiFi for all students and will start with BYOD next school year.

Inside my SMART Collaborative Classroom I want more student engagement whilst the use of their own devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets and really want SMARTamp to get going. I'm quite familiar with SMARTamp and will learn a lot more during the Global SEE Summit in Calgary, Canada which should be the best PD thing for teachers ever. Will share more about this one later.

Because SMARTamp is connected to the Google accounts and as inspired by some other SMART Exemplary Educators from the US, I want to do some Google training. At first an online training to become a Google Educator and later in November I want to attent the Google Teacher Academy in Amsterdam to become a Google Certified Teacher as well.

During the next school year I'm looking forward to join a Learning Circle from the Global Teenager Project again with my 'world citizenship'-classes and cooperate and collaborate with other classes from around the globe. Perhaps we could even visit another school as an expedition in another country next school year.

And at last I want to try this Peer Scholar thing, which should be pretty cool to use in my classes. Let the summer begin and I will share more about professional development on this blog ...

SMART Collaborative Classroom from the past school year

Global SEE Summit

Oh YES!! I have been selected to attend the Global SEE Summit from July 20th-26th in Calgary, Canada!! I got the e-mail from EMEA SMART Education Specialist Ainhoa Marcos and the e-mail made me very happy! The e-mail stated that:

"You are a proven technology leader and an outstanding advocate for inspiring excellence in education through the use of technology. You are simply amazing and we are absolutely thrilled to invite you to attend this exclusive event."

I've been to a SEE summit in Calgary before in 2011, but this time it's going to be a global happening and there will be around 25 SEEs from EMEA as well. This is just awesome! No it's EPIC and I'm really looking forward to meet al the other amazing teachers from around the globe.

To be selected all the SMART Exemplary Educators in EMEA and NA had to create a short video and should be about there first, best experience with SMART Notebook software or other SMART product. I did create one, but wasn't too happy after I send that one in and did create another one. Both of them are for sharing ... (as I've stated before "Celebrate failure" and the first one is just not good enough).

This year there will be about 75 of the best SEEs invited for the Global Summit. And I'm very  happy to be one of them and collaborate with them, share with them the things I've learned and experienced the past few years and will learn a lot from them in order to take a lot home with me. Happy to meet inspiring SEEs like Charity and Danesa again and more than happy to meet Rafranz for the first time. 

And on top of this Deena asked me if would like to do a workshop about Global Collaboration. I've been doing quite a few of those collaboration projects with SEEs from Russia, Turkey, Saudi-Arabia, Czech Republic and the US the past year. And at the moment I'm involved in a long term collaboration project with teachers and schools from Surinam and Curacao through the Global Teenager Project. Awesome project whilst I will share at the Summit on Wednesday the 23rd of July ... I will keep you posted.
